2018-06-19 Under the first Trump administration the U.S. withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council. Secretary Pompeo called the council “a poor defender of human rights”, accused it of allowing authoritarian government in its membership, claimed unfair election processes, and claimed bias against Israel. The UN representative at the time Nikki Haley also made her remarks.

2018-08-31 The Trump administration eliminated funding during its first term to the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency.

2025-01-24 Marco Rubio placed a freeze on all foreign aid for 90 days except for Israel and Egypt. News outlets reported Israel and Egypt are among the top recipients of U.S. foreign aid, with Israel receiving roughly $3.3B (billion) annually and Egypt receiving $1.5B (billion) per year.
2025-02-04 The White House released an executive order to reevaluate the U.S. commitment to three UN organizations “that deserve renewed scrutiny”: the UNHRC; the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); and the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
2025-02-27 The Trump administration ended funding for a UN program fighting HIV/AIDS.

2025-08-28 The Trump administration withdrew the U.S. from the UN Review of Human Rights Record, stating it would not participate in the upcoming Universal Periodic Review. ACLU issued a press release calling this an attempt to evade accountability.

2026 January
2026-01-21 Trump created a “Board of Peace” during the World Economic Forum to eventually replace the existing UN Charter. The new charter would exclude countries like Canada and include countries like Russia and China.
He also announced that a $1B contribution would secure permanent membership, and he would be chairman for life.
One of Trump’s first pledges of the Board’s mission is “looking over the Unite dNations and making sure it runs properly”.
