Hegemony
Define Hegemony
Hegemony is the political, economic, or cultural dominance/control of one group, state, or entity over others. It signifies supreme leadership or influence, often where the ruling party maintains power through consensus or accepted norms rather than just brute force. Key synonyms include dominance, ascendancy, supremacy, and dominion.
Examples
Regional Hegemony: Historical examples include Sparta as the leader of the Peloponnese League.
International Hegemony: Nazi Germany’s military dominance over Europe in the 1940s, or British political influence in the 18th-19th century.
Cultural Hegemony: A social group or “popular crowd” dictating cultural norms and defining what is popular or “cool”.
Economic Hegemony: The economic power of the U.S. following World War I, influencing global markets.
