Scriptures of All Faiths

COMMENTARY

I’m not a religious person, and I don’t follow any denomination. But with everything going on in the world, I’ve found myself thinking more about religion than I used to. The following are some scriptures I’ve come across that seem relevant to the times we’re living in, especially when it comes to empathy, mercy, and how we treat other people.

This list will keep growing over time because I’m new to scripture and have only recently picked up a Bible for the first time. I’m also interested in learning about teachings from other religions, not just the Bible, so there will likely be more added as I continue reading and learning.

I may even consider adding non-religious quotes. For example, in Immigration I have included this one: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-to’st to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door”.

John 9:41 “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin. But now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains”.

Luke 6:22-26 “Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets. But blessed are you when people revile you and hate you and speak all manner of evil about you on account of my name, for this is how they treated the true prophets”.

Matthew 7:15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves”.

Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven”.

Matthew 7:22 “Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?”

Matthew 12:31-32 “Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come”.

Matthew 15:8 “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me”.

Matthew 23:1-4 “For they preach, but do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger”.

Matthew 24:24 “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect”.

Matthew 25:41-43 “Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels”.

2 Thessalonians 2:3 “Let no one deceive you by any means; for that day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition”.

Divided House

Luke 9:49-50 “Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.” “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”

Luke 11:17 “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall.”

Mark 3:25 “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.”

Matthew 12:25 “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.”

Empathy & Mercy

Exodus 33:19 “I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion”. (Quote: It is not up to us to police the borders of God’s grace…and it’s not up to us to be offended when God’s mercy reaches farther than we expected).

Greed

Luke 18:25 “Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God”.

Mark 8:36 “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36-37 “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”

Mark 10:25 “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God”.

Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”.

Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money”.

Matthew 16:24 “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me”.

Homosexuality

Interesting Article: Barna (Sept 21, 2007) “A New Generation Expresses its Skepticism and Frustration with Christianity” A new study among 16-to-29-year-olds showed a greater degree of criticism with a growing theme: “Christianity in today’s society no longer looks like Jesus” and the first thing that comes to the mind of participants was “anti-homosexuality”.

Scripture often cited by those who condemn homosexuality: Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 20:13, Romas 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10.

~~~ About Leviticus
When this book was written same-sex activity was often associated with power dynamics such as slavery, pederasty, ritual acts to worship fertility gods, and humiliation of defeated enemies. Much of what’s talked about in Leviticus is also in a section that discusses incest, child sacrifice, bestiality and adultery and/or ties practices to those rituals, **NOT** modern consensual adult relationships (which were not a recognized social category at the time).
Acts 10:13-15 “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean”.
Exodus 33:19 “I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion”. (Quote: It is not up to us to police the borders of God’s grace…and it’s not our place to be offended when God’s mercy reaches farther than we expected. God’s love has never been about qualifications).
How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
Matthew 18:32-36 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. 35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister form your heart”.
