SAMPLE LETTER
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am deeply concerned by the growing normalization of division, hostility, and political tribalism in our public discourse. A healthy democracy depends on citizens being able to disagree without viewing one another as enemies. Yet too often, political rhetoric is driven by outrage, fear, and resentment rather than by facts, reason, and a commitment to the common good.
Leaders have a responsibility to reduce tensions and strengthen civic trust. When they instead benefit from amplifying conflict and encouraging citizens to distrust one another, our institutions, communities, and democracy suffer.
America is strongest when its leaders seek to unite rather than divide, to persuade rather than inflame, and to elevate public discourse rather than exploit our differences. I believe we are falling short of that standard, and the examples below illustrate why these concerns deserve serious attention.
Below are examples of which events highlight these concerns. Some of the points are there for historical context.
Chronology.
1982-01-01 The Federalist Society was founded by Yale, Harvard, and University of Chicago law students to challenge liberal legal ideas. Many Trump allies have been members or supporters.
1992-08-17 Pat Buchanan declared a cultural and religious war as part of his “Make America First Again” campaign.
1999-08-16 David Horowitz published an article in Salon, writing, “Guns don’t kill black people, other blacks do… The NAACP’s ludicrous idea to sue gun manufacturers is yet another attempt by the left to avoid personal responsibility for some individuals’ bad behavior…If blacks are oppressed in America, why isn’t there a black exodus? Why do all those black Haitians want to come here? To be oppressed?”.
2008-08-24 Three white supremacists attempted to assassinate Obama. The alleged motive was a belief that an African American should not be elected President.
2008-10-27 Two white supremacists were arrested after plotting to murder Obama and then carry out a racially motivated killing spree.
2010-03-01 SarahPAC published a map placing crosshairs over Democratic congressional districts with the slogan “Reload”.
2010-06-01 James O’Keefe founded far-right group Project Veritas, which is notorious for fabricating “gotcha” material against political opposition.
2011-01-08 Representative Gabby Giffords and 18 others were shot at a “Congress On Your Corner” event in Tucson.
2011-01-11 Sarah Palin rejected claims that her political rhetoric contributed to the Giffords shooting, calling the accusations “blood libel.”
2011-11-11 Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez fired a semi-automatic rifle at the White House in effort to assassinate Obama.
2014-12-14 Alex Jones claimed on air that Sandy Hook was a false flag plot by Democrats over the Second Amendment. He didn’t concede until 2022 the shooting was real.
2015-01-01 By this year, Obama had been through at least eleven (11) attempted assassinations or plots.
2016-08-09 During a campaign rally in Wilmington NC, Trump remarked “maybe the Second Amendment supporters should ‘do’ something about Hillary Clinton”.
2016-08-22 During a speech Trump said, “You could go to war zones in countries we’re fighting and it’s safer than living in some of our inner cities that are run by the Democrats”.
2017-01-20 In his inaugural address, Trump said the political establishment protected itself rather than ordinary citizens.
2017-06-14 A gunman opened fire at a congressional baseball practice in Virginia, targeting Republican lawmakers.
2017-08-11 During a Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville a white supremacist drove into counterprotesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer.
2017-08-15 Trump called Unite the Right activists “very fine people”. David Duke submitted a social media post thanking Trump for his kind words about the protesters at the Unite the Right rally. Duke wrote, “Thank you President Trump for your honesty and courage to tell the truth about #Charlottesville & condemn the leftist terrorists in BLM/Antifa”.
2018-02-05 During a speech Trump accused Democrats of treason.
2018-10-01 Bill Clinton survived at least 5 assassination attempts.
2019-03-01 Marjorie Taylor Greene confronted and harassed Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg and promoted claims that he was funded by George Soros
2019-09-10 Trump publicly criticized former National Security Advisor John Bolton.
2020-06-01 Law enforcement used excessive force to remove racial justice protestors from Lafayette Square. Trump asked if he could order law enforcement to “just shoot” the protestors.
2020-06-28 Mark and Patricia McCloskey pointed firearms at protesters outside their Missouri home.
2020-07-07 Julie Kelly published “Disloyal Opposition: How the NeverTrump Right Tried—and Failed—to Take Down the President”.
2020-08-25 Kyle Rittenhouse shot three protesters during unrest in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He was acquitted on all charges including first-degree intentional homicide and later received support from many conservatives. Reports later stated Kash Patel assisted in efforts to pursue lawsuits on Rittenhouse’s behalf.
2020-12-15 After Biden won Trump posted, “This Fake election can no longer stand. Get moving Republicans”.
2020-12-19 Trump posted, “Big protest in D.C on january 6th Be there, will be wild!”
2021-01-04 Nick Fuentes said on his podcast, “What can you and I do to a State legislator – besides kill them? We should not do that. I’m not advising that, but I mean, what else can you do, right?”. This comment was made while talking about officials who refused to overturn 2020 election results.
2021-01-06 After January 6, Republican figures and right-wing influencers falsely blamed Antifa, amplifying “false flag” and “Ray Epps” theories.
2021-01-06 Tucker Carlson allegedly texted a producer about J6, “A couple of weeks ago, I was watching video of people fighting on the street in Washington,” Carlson texted a producer. “A group of Trump guys surrounded an Antifa kid and started pounding the living s**t out of him. It was three against one, at least. Jumping a guy like that is dishonorable obviously. It’s not how white men fight. Yet suddenly I found myself rooting for the mob against the man, hoping they’d hit him harder, kill him. I really wanted them to hurt the kid. I could taste it”.
2021-06-24 An OAN host repeated election-fraud claims and suggested “traitors” who stole the election should be executed
2022-01-01 Julie Kelly published “January 6: How Democrats Used the Capitol Protest to Launch a War on Terror Against the Political Right”.
2022-03-29 Kash Patel published a politically biased children’s book The Plot Against the King, featuring King Donald, Hillary’s horrible plot, and Komey’s spying slugs.
2022-05-24 George W. Bush survived at least 2 assassination attempts.
2022-05-25 Beto O’Rourke was physically removed from Governor Greg Abbott’s Uvalde shooting press conference after criticizing state gun policies.
2022-06-08 Nicholas Roske was arrested for attempting to assassinate Justice Brett Kavanaugh and later pleaded guilty.
2022-06-23 After NYSRPA v. Bruen, the Federalist Society – a Project 2025 supporter – expanded public-carry rights.
2022-10-01 Following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter researchers reported increases in impersonation, misinformation, and hate speech. Elon Musk also allowed users to pay their way for their blue check verification.
2022-10-22 Oath Keepers members testified about a cache of weapons stashed at a hotel for potential Jan 6 violence.
2022-10-28 Paul Pelosi was attacked with a hammer in his home. Charlie Kirk responded to the Pelosi attack on his podcast, “…why is the Conservative movement to blame for gay schizophrenic nudists that are hemp jewelry makers breaking into somebody’s home…” and then urged a “brave patriot” to post bail for the suspect.
2022-12-08 Charlie Kirk said, “If you’re a WNBA, pot-smoking, Black lesbian, do you get treated better than a United States marine?”
2023-02-08 Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders framed politics as a choice between “normal or crazy”, accused Democrats of promoting “woke fantasies.” and asserted that Republicans “are under attack in a left-wing culture war”.
2023-04-05 Charlie Kirk said, “I think it’s worth it to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the second amendment to protect our other God-given rights. That is a prudent deal. It is rational.”
2023-05-19 Charlie Kirk said, “Happening all the time in urban America, prowling Blacks go around for fun to go target white people, that’s a fact. It’s happening more and more.”
2023-07-13 Charlie Kirk said, “If we would have said that Joy Reid and Michelle Obama and Sheila Jackson Lee and Ketanji Brown Jackson were affirmative action picks, we would have been called racists. Now they’re coming out and they’re saying it for us … You do not have the brain processing power to otherwise be taken really seriously. You had to go steal a white person’s slot to go be taken somewhat seriously.”
2023-09-29 Trump mocked the attack on Paul Pelosi during a California GOP event.

2023-11-02 Ken Buck broke with Trump-aligned Republicans on fiscal conservatism and rule-of-law issues.
2024-01-04 After the Perry, Iowa school shooting, Trump told the community they would “have to get over it.”
2024-01-23 Charlie Kirk said, “If I’m dealing with somebody in customer service who’s a moronic Black woman, I wonder is she there because of her excellence, or is she there because of affirmative action?”
2024-01-23 Charlie Kirk said, “If I see a Black pilot, I’m going to be like, boy, I hope he’s qualified”.
2024-02-23 At CPAC, Kash Patel called for building an “army” to help Trump fight the media, the deep state, education systems, and border policies
2024-03-16 Trump said during a campaign rally in Vandalia Ohio, “If I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a blood bath for the whole – that’s going to be the least of it. It’s going to be a blood bath for the country. That’ll be the least of it. But they’re not going to sell those cars”.
2024-03-28 Trump shared an image of a truck mural depicting President Biden bound and gagged. In a statement, Michael Tyler said, “Trump is regularly inciting political violence and it’s time people take him seriously”.
2024-04-01 Charlie Kirk said, “We need to have a Nuremberg-style trial for every gender-affirming clinic doctor. We need it immediately.”
2024-07-13 This was the first assassination attempt on Trump in Butler PA. Ryan Routh, the convicted assailant who attempted to assassinate Trump, later attempted to stab himself in the neck after being found guilty September 23, 2025. One of the MAGA followers constructed a statue of Trump out of nails.
2024-07-15 AR-15s were allowed at the Milwaukee RNC. Water bottles were not.
2024-07-15 JD Vance criticized elements of Trump-aligned messaging about Ukraine and foreign policy.
2024-07-26 A news article quoted JD Vance, ”…the rejection of the American family…is perhaps the most pernicious and evil thing the left has done…”.
2024-08-03 Jack Posobiec’s book “Unhumans” argued that left-wing movements undermine civilization and promoted themes associated with anti-communist political activism. This person also promoted the Pizzagate.
2024-08-07 During a Shelby Police Department memorial service JD Vance politicized an officer’s death and blamed Kamala Harris policies for it.
2024-09-08 Charlie Kirk answered a question if his ten-year-old daughter were pregnant from a rape if he would force pregnancy, “The answer is yes, the baby would be delivered.”
2024-10-07 Pro Israel groups including Canary Mission peddled conspiracies on social media that Columbia University student and pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil helped plan Hamas attacks. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also alleged Khalil distributed fliers with a Hamas logo. On March 8 2025 the Trump administration arrested him and shipped him to Louisiana.
2024-10-31 During an interview with Tucker Carlson, Trump called Liz Cheney a radical war hawk and stated, “let’s put her with the rifles standing there with nine barrels shooting at her” and “let’s see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained on her face”.
2024-11-03 During a rally, Trump encouraged deadly violence, “to get me someone would have to shoot through the fake news, and I don’t mind that so much”.
2024-11-06 Mike Davis wrote on Twitter “I want to drag their dead political bodies through the streets, burn them, and throw them off the wall”.
2025-01-10 Lucy Harrison was shot in the chest with a semi-automatic handgun by her father in Prosper Texas after an argument about Trump. The father was never charged, stating the gun went off accidentally.
2025-01-20 The administration eliminated the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, repealed the ATF’s zero-tolerance dealer policy, reduced community-violence funding, and removed $1 billion for school mental-health programs.

2025-04-30 Charlie Kirk said, “America has freedom of religion, of course, but we should be frank: large dedicated Islamic areas are a threat to America.”
2025-05-26 Violent rhetoric from posts made by Trump emboldened activists to threaten judges after courts ruled ending the 14th Amendment to the Constitution and tariffs illegal. Judges received death threats, bomb threats, malicious swat calls, doxxing, and they were posted on a wanted poster at the White House entitled “Known Get-Trump Judicial Activists”. 2025-06-08 Stephen Miller claimed protests in Los Angeles were “an insurrection against the laws and sovereignty of the United States”.
2025-06-14 Minnesota House Democratic leader Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in a politically motivated attack. Investigators found a manifesto targeting other public officials. Senator Mike Lee mocked the murder in a post two days later.
2025-06-14 Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were shot in a politically motivated attack by a suspect posing as a police officer
2025-06-16 Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee mocked the murder of Melissa and Mark Hortman in a social media post on X. The post was captioned with “This is what happens when Marxists don’t get their way” and a second post “Nightmare on Waltz Street”. The posts have since been taken down.
2025-06-17 After the politically motivated assassinations Trump refused to contact Tim Walz, saying, “I think the governor is so whacked out, why would I call him”, “the guy doesn’t have a clue, he’s a mess”, and “why waste time”.
2025-06-17 Thomas Massie opposed military escalation and emergency powers and introduced a bipartisan War Powers Resolution to prohibit “United States Armed Forces from unauthorized hostilities in the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

2025-09-10 Fox host Jesse Watters proclaimed the Democrats were “at war” while he simultaneously attacked transgender people.
2025-09-10 In a social media post Netanyahu called Charlie Kirk the “lion hearted friend of Israel”.
2025-09-10 Matt Forney referred to the Kirk shooting as the political right’s “Reichstag Fire” moment
2025-09-10 MSNBC was forced to fire Matthew Dowd for accurately pointing out that Charlie Kirk historically pushed hate rhetoric.
2025-09-10 A school shooting occurred at Evergreen High School in Colorado on the same day Charlie Kirk was shot, but it received comparatively little media attention
2025-09-11 During a media press conference Kash Patel offered, “Rest now brother, we have the watch, and I’ll see you in Valhalla”.
2025-09-11 Data shared by news outlets showed a sharp spike in Republicans using the phrase “civil war” on social media after the shooting
2025-09-11 Derrick Van Orden posted on social media, “Yesterday is the reason I will be at war for the next 20. I will not allow these leftist scumbags to take my country”. In this post he added side-by-side photos of 9-11 and Charlie Kirk.

2025-09-11 Eric Trump falsely claimed on both Fox News and The Benny Show that “bullets are only flying one way”.
2025-09-11 The Daily Wire posted accusations on X that the left killed Charlie Kirk and told its readers this is a fight between good and evil. They included a Matt Walsh Blog.
2025-09-11 Christopher Landau posted a targeted threat on X about foreigners who weren’t sufficiently mourning Charlie Kirk or saying anything negatively about Kirk. He directed his readers to “feel free to bring such comments by foreigners to my attention so the @StateDept can protect the American people”.
2025-09-11 Influencers like Nick Fuentes became increasingly vocal after the Kirk shooting and made references to a “groyper war”.
2025-09-11 White supremacists targeted Black college campuses after Kirk was shot, and seven schools had to go on lockdown: Alabama State University, Southern University in Louisiana, Clark Atlanta University, Spellman College in Georgia, Virginia State University, Hampton University in Virginia, and Bethune Cookman in Florida.
2025-09-11 The Democratic National Committee Headquarters had to go on lockdown after receiving a bomb threat in response to the Kirk shooting.
2025-09-11 A US Naval Academy went under lockdown after receiving online threats after the Kirk shooting. Amidst the chaos a midshipman was accidentally shot.
2025-09-11 The two individuals previously detained and questioned in the Kirk shooting reported receiving death threats from Conservatives and had been outwardly doxed
2025-09-11 Pete Hegseth launched a witch hunt against military members who didn’t sufficiently mourn, “We are tracking all these very closely – and will address, immediately. Completely unacceptable”. General Mike Flynn responded to “Fire every one of these from their respective services immediately…” while Gunther Eagleman wrote, “…thoroughly root out the radical leftists festering in our DoW”.
2025-09-11 Trump posthumously awarded Charlie Kirk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, forced the nation to lower their flags, and provided a large motorcade escort.
2025-09-11 The dean of Tennessee University was fired over a ‘zero sympathy’ post about Charlie Kirk.
2025-09-11 During a conference in Strasbourg France, the EU refused to provide a moment of silence for Charlie Kirk and were heckled and booed for it.
2025-09-11 The study “What NIJ Research Tells Us About Domestic Terrorism” vanished from the DOJ website and was archived. The study opened with “Since 1990, far right extremists have committed far more ideologically motivated homicides than far left…including 227 events that took more than 520 lives”.
2025-09-12 Authorities detained the Charlie Kirk shooting suspect
2025-09-12 Conservatives speculated over bullet engravings from the shooting and baselessly connected them to transgender people, anti-fascism, furry role play, video games, and trolling.
2025-09-12 In an interview with Fox, Trump said “radicals on the right are radical because they don’t want crime” but that “radicals on the left are the problem”.

2025-09-12 Three Democratic Oregon state senators received bomb threats following the Kirk shooting: Rob Wagner, Kayse Jama, and James Manning.
2025-09-13 Nancy Mace wrote on social media, “I repeat: DEMOCRATS OWN THIS…hold the line”, and claimed that the left made extremism and violence mainstream.
2025-09-13 Laura Loomer posted, “How much you want to bet we are going to find out there is a Trans terror cell that groomed Tyler Robinson and possibly even provided him with the gun to kill Charlie? It seems like this was very pre-meditated”. On the same day in a separate post, Loomer responded to News Wire “It’s time to designate the transgender movement as a terrorist movement.” The next day the Scoop sent out a Poll “Should we ban transgenders from purchasing firearms?”
2025-09-13 Far-right commentator and white nationalist Nick Fuentes warned listeners to not “take the bait” of conservatives inciting violence.
2025-09-13 American Airlines pilots were fired for talking negatively about the Charlie Kirk shooting.
2025-09-14 Katie Miller was publicly frazzled about chalk drawings on her sidewalk and claimed it was an act of intimidation. Derrick Van Orden replied on X, “We are 100% behind you.
