SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am deeply concerned about the Trump administration’s approach to education and the damage it is doing to students, educators, research institutions, and academic integrity. Education should be guided by evidence, expertise, and intellectual honesty. Instead, I see a pattern of political interference, censorship, funding cuts, and policies that undermine educational opportunity.

Schools and universities are being pressured to eliminate or restrict instruction on race, gender, and other subjects that some political groups oppose. Historical facts are being removed or reframed to fit political narratives, while book bans and curriculum restrictions continue to limit students’ access to information. This amounts to whitewashing history, narrowing academic inquiry, and allowing extremist viewpoints to exert greater influence over what students are taught.

Higher education faces similar attacks. Republican politicians increasingly treat universities as political targets, and funding for important research is being cut or threatened as a tool of leverage and retaliation. Academic institutions should not be punished for political reasons.

Leadership at the Department of Education inspires little confidence. Linda McMahon lacks educational credentials, yet oversees policies affecting millions of students and teachers. Under her leadership, programs such as TRIO - which help low-income, first-generation, and disadvantaged students access higher education - has been gutted. At the same time, the administration continues to interfere with student loan programs, making affordable higher education more difficult to obtain.

The administration has also supported the use of artificial intelligence in education while showing little interest in meaningful oversight. AI systems are known to generate false information and, in some cases, harmful content, including material related to self-harm and suicide. Encouraging widespread classroom use without safeguards is irresponsible.

Teachers are already facing burnout, staffing shortages, and growing workloads. Rather than addressing these problems, the administration’s policies make them worse. Efforts to declassify critical professions such as nursing as non-professional further undermine educational and workforce standards.

Finally, these policies overwhelmingly benefit wealthy families while shifting costs onto everyone else. Public funds are increasingly directed toward private-school initiatives, forcing taxpayers to subsidize opportunities that primarily benefit those who already have greater financial resources.

Taken together, these actions represent an effort to politicize education, restrict what students can learn, weaken public institutions, and reduce educational opportunities for ordinary Americans. The examples below outline these concerns. Some are included for historical context, but all illustrate the broader pattern that has led to my alarm and frustration.

Chronology.

1966-01-01 Jerry Falwell founded the whites-only Lynchburg Christian Academy to circumvent the 1954 ruling to ban segregation. He wrote in his book ‘America Can Be Saved’, “I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won’t have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them”. In 1977 courts ruled that segregated private religious schools could not qualify as charitable organizations or retain tax exempt status.

1967-01-01 Interesting FYI: Project Rebound was founded, offering hope and higher education opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals. Project Rebound Metrics from 2016 to 2016 had an astounding recidivism rate of 0%, meaning all students enrolled in their program did not re-offend, which also by that metric means the project has a 100% success rate.
