Secretary Hegseth has barred military officers from Pentagon-sponsored graduate programs at some of America’s leading universities, calling them “breeding grounds of toxic indoctrination” without presenting evidence. Why should one official’s political judgment restrict educational opportunities that strengthen military leadership, and will you demand objective academic standards rather than ideological loyalty tests for deciding where servicemembers may study?

Pete Hegseth has argued that America should fight wars by its own rules rather than be constrained by the Geneva Conventions. He has promised no “stupid rules of engagement,” while the administration has portrayed military lawyers who enforce the law as potential roadblocks and dismantled programs designed to prevent civilian casualties. President Trump avoided military service through multiple deferments, has reportedly called fallen troops “losers” and “suckers,” abruptly fired senior military leaders, and his political operation even used an image from a dignified transfer of fallen soldiers in a fundraising email. How is that patriotism or respect for those who serve, and what will you do when this administration treats servicemembers, veterans and the fallen as political props rather than people whose sacrifice deserves genuine honor?
