SAMPLE LETTER
Dear Sir or Madam,
The Trump administration and and its loyalists have repeatedly promoted conspiracy theories and misinformation that undermine public trust in institutions and public discourse. This behavior reflects poorly on our country.
It is particularly troubling when elected officials and party leaders amplify such claims through social media rather than engaging in serious, fact-based discussion. Public servants should set an example of integrity, responsibility, and respect for the truth.
The examples below illustrate these concerns. For example, Trump spread misinformation about Hurricane Helene relief efforts, leaving thousands of victims afraid to file claims. Vance spread misinformation about Somalians eating pets, and residents suffered death threats and bomb threats. These deliberate efforts to fearmonger are damaging, dangerous, and embarrassing.

1992-03-08 Kenneth Starr led a witch-hunt against the Clintons in the so-called Whitewater scandal, alleging fraud.
1994-01-01 Televangelist Jerry Falwell promoted The Clinton Chronicles, a mockumentary accusing Bill Clinton of drug use, affairs, harassment, financial crimes, cover-ups, witness murders, and document destruction.
1999-02-01 Jerry Falwell’s National Liberty Journal claimed the Teletubby Tinky Winky promoted homosexuality because he was purple and carried a purse.
1999-06-20 Falwell’s National Liberty Journal called the Lilith Fair women’s music festival demonic because it referenced Lilith.
2001-09-11 Alex Jones decried that 9/11 was a “false flag”.

2008-01-01 Trump pushed the “birther” conspiracy about Obama, claiming he was ineligible to run for presidency.
2011-01-01 From 2011 to 2019, Fox News repeatedly mocked “shrimp on a treadmill” research, inflating costs and ignoring its food-safety purpose.
2011-03-28 During an interview with Fox, Trump claimed about Obama, “He doesn’t have a birth certificate. He may have one, but there’s something on that, maybe religion, maybe it says he is a Muslim”.
2012-10-30 Right-wing figures spread claims that Obama manipulated Hurricane Sandy to help his reelection; Trump tweeted several times that the storm benefited Obama politically.
2014-02-04 Facebook rumors claimed Obama ordered $1 billion in disposable coffins for FEMA detention centers in case of an American revolt.
2014-12-14 Alex Jones claimed on air that Sandy Hook was a false flag plot by Democrats over the Second Amendment. He didn’t concede until 2022 the shooting was real.
2015-01-01 Alex Jones claimed the government is putting chemicals in the water that turn the frogs gay”.
2015-02-18 Greg Abbott and Ted Cruz questioned Pentagon training exercises amid martial-law rumors; Abbott later ordered the Texas State Guard to monitor U.S. military drills.
2015-05-21 A London Review of Books article suggested the Bin Laden raid was a lie and cover-up.
2016-06-16 Trump promoted the claim that Obama helped found ISIS, telling CNBC, “No, I meant that he’s the founder of ISIS. I do. He was the most valuable player. I gave him the most valuable player award”.
2016-12-02 Pizzagate spread online after leaked Podesta emails were falsely interpreted as code for a Clinton-linked child sex ring.
2017-01-20 Though it originated in 1990, the Deep State conspiracy gained a lot of traction during Trump’s first presidency. The theory alleges a shadow government of unelected officials and corporate elites manipulate and run the country.
2017-08-15 Trump called Unite the Right activists “very fine people”. David Duke submitted a social media post thanking Trump for his kind words about the protesters at the Unite the Right rally. Duke wrote, “Thank you President Trump for your honesty and courage to tell the truth about #Charlottesville & condemn the leftist terrorists in BLM/Antifa”.
2017-10-01 QAnon began on 4chan when an anonymous user claimed ‘Q clearance’ and posted cryptic pro-Trump messages and the slogan “Where we go one, we go all.”
2018-02-05 During a speech Trump accused Democrats of treason.
2018-05-23 Parents of the Sandy Hook victims sued Alex Jones for defamation.
2018-11-01 Marjorie Taylor Greene posted a deleted theory that California wildfires were started by “space solar generators.
2020-04-23 During a COVID press conference, Trump mused over injecting disinfectant as treatment. When a reporter told Trump to stop spreading dangerous misinformation Trump lashed out.
2020-06-02 Since 2020, Republicans have repeatedly claimed George Soros funds left-wing protests or chaos.
2020-09-17 Trump posted, “No one has been more wrong, more often than Biden. He voted FOR the Iraq War, he supported the defense sequester that gutted our military, he opposed the mission to take out Osama bin Laden, he opposed killing Soleimani, he oversaw the rise of ISIS, and he cheered the rise of…China as a “positive development” for America and the world. If it were up to Joe, bin Laden and Soleimani would still be alive, ISIS would be still on the rampage, and China would now be the dominant power in the world – not America.”.
2020-10-13 After Trump boosted a QAnon-linked Bin Laden conspiracy, a Navy SEAL from the raid publicly refuted the claim.
2021-01-01 RFK Jr.’s Children’s Health Defense published The Measles Book; Thirty-Give Secrets the Government and the Media Aren’t Telling You, to push the conspiracy that the government and media are hiding vaccine information.
2021-01-06 After January 6, Republican figures and right-wing influencers falsely blamed Antifa, amplifying “false flag” and “Ray Epps” theories.
2021-06-01 Some vaccine skeptics promoted ivermectin (horse dewormer) as a COVID treatment, later citing Merck’s Pentagon oral-treatment deal as supposed proof.
2021-06-04 Legislation under the HALT Drunk Driving Act required new vehicles to include “kill switch” technology, sparking privacy and government overreach concerns. Ron DeSantis posted to X, “The idea that the federal government would require auto manufacturers to equip cars with a ‘kill switch’ that can be controlled by the government is something you’d expect in Orwell’s 1984”.
2021-06-06 Conspiracy theorists claimed Italy used military satellites to switch U.S. votes to Biden; Trump revived the claim in 2026 while targeting Georgia voting machines.
2021-12-01 Conservatives spread the hoax that schools gave litter boxes to students identifying as cats; the claim persisted into 2023 and spread internationally.
2022-12-02 Alex Jones filed two chapter 11 bankruptcies.
2022-12-03 Trump posted, “So, with the revelation of MASSIVE & WIDESPREAD FRAUD & DECEPTION in working closely with Big Tech Companies, the DNC, & the Democrat Parter, do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION? A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution. 2023-01-16 Conservatives claimed the green M&M is gay.
2023-09-17 Trump again claimed in an NBC interview that the 2020 election was rigged.
2023-11-13 Social media conspiracy claims spread that Bill Gates bioengineered, and then released, genetically modified ticks to release the alpha-gal virus.
2024-01-08 Trump wrote “In @NikkiHaley’s situation, reports indicate that her parents were not U.S. citizens at the time of her birth in 1972…” and asserted that she was disqualified from candidacy.
2024-01-26 News outlets reported a wave of misleading claims about immigration, the economy, electric vehicles, the Panama Canal, 2020, and January 6.
2024-02-27 Kash Patel promoted an anti-vaccine supplement on Truth Social, calling it “The only mRNA vaccine detoxification system.”
2024-02-29 Republicans blocked an IVF bill while making false claims about human-animal chimeras; Emma Waters later suggested IVF outsourcing could invite birthright citizenship.
2024-03-27 After the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse, fake videos and conspiracies spread online, blaming explosives, DEI, or Israel. According to some reports, the posts allegedly came from verified right-wing accounts on X.
2024-03-28 Phil Lyman blamed the Baltimore bridge crash on DEI and targeted Karenthia A. Barber in a repost from the Young Conservatives Federation, “This is what happens when you have Governors who prioritize diversity over the wellbeing and security of citizens”.
2024-03-28 Michigan State Representative Matt Maddock posted on social media during March Madness, “Happening right now. Three buses just loaded up with illegal invaders at Detroit Metro. Anyone have any idea where they’re headed with their police escort? @petehoekstra”.
2024-04-06 Rudy Giuliani suggested earthquakes were targeting communist states, later claiming critics lacked a sense of humor.
2024-04-13 Trump called his 2024 trial “rigged,” a political witch hunt, and Biden-led election interference.
2024-07-01 False posts claimed an EU-Nigeria trade pact forced Nigeria to legalize same-sex relationships. A 2024 investigation by Deutsche Welle showed that American far-right Christian groups have been influencing and fueling anti-LGBTQ sentiment in Africa, including Nigeria, for decades - pushing homophobic misinformation and lobbying for anti-gay legislation.
2024-07-19 After the CrowdStrike outage, Elon Musk posted, “Not very “bright” right now, is it?” alongside a reposted Bright Network DEI banner, suggesting the outage was due to DEI. America First Legal filed a civil rights complaint on CrowdStrike for discriminating against white males. Steve Guest posted “Equity is nobody in the world being able to get on an airplane simultaneously. Thanks CrowdStrike”.
2024-09-07 At a Wisconsin rally, Trump falsely claimed children were going to school and coming home with sex changes.
2024-09-09 Trump reposted a tweet from JD Vance, “Months ago, I raised the issue of Haitian illegal immigrants draining social services and generally causing chaos all over Springfield, Ohio. Reports now show that people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn’t be in this country. Where is our border czar?”. Trump added “Border Czar Kamala Harris invited thousands of Haitian Migrants to flood into America and now a small town in Ohio is being torn apart because of what Kamala did”.
2024-09-09 Ted Cruz posted a meme of two cats hugging, captioned “Please vote for Trump so Haitian immigrants don’t eat us”.
2024-09-10 Trump falsely claimed that Democrats support “after birth” abortions.
2024-09-10 JD Vance posted “In the last several weeks, my office has received many inquiries from actual residents of Springfield who’ve said their neighbors’ pets or local wildlife were abducted by Haitian migrants. It’s possible, of course, that all of these rumors will turn out to be false”.
2024-09-10 Laura Loomer spread the rumor that Kamala Harris wore a Bluetooth earring during the presidential debate; the post reached at least 6.6 million views.
2024-09-11 JD Vance defended spreading Springfield pet rumors on CNN, “When you have a lot of people saying ‘My pets are being abducted’ or ‘Geese at the city pond are being abducted and slaughtered right in front of us’, this is crazy stuff. And again, whether those exact rumors turn out to be mostly true, somewhat true, whatever the case may be – Kaitlan, this town has been ravaged by 20,000 migrants coming in. Health care costs are up. Housing costs are up. Communicable diseases like HIV and TB have skyrocketed in this small Ohio town. This is what Kamala Harris’s border policies have done. And I think it’s interesting, Kaitlan, that, that the media didn’t care about the carnage brought by these policies until we turned it into a meme about cats”.
2024-09-12 After Trump and Vance spread pet-eating claims, Springfield residents faced extensive bomb threats against county, school, and hospital facilities.
2024-09-15 During an interview with Face the Nation, JD Vance responded to Springfield bomb threats by condemning the media for reporting on it, “We don’t believe in a heckler’s veto in this country. You can condemn violence on the one hand, while also saying that there have been terrible problems caused by Kamala Harris’ open border in Springfield. Now, you said that these are false rumors, but I’ve heard about a dozen things…ten of them are verifiable and confirmable…maybe all of these constituents are lying to me, but I would appreciate if all of the media showed up and did some real investigation rather than amplifying the worst people in the world”.
2024-09-30 After Hurricane Helene hit, Trump posted, “…I’ll be there shortly, but don’t like the reports that I’m getting about the Federal Government, and the Democrat Governor of the State, going out of their way to not help people in Republican areas. MAGA!” It is worth mentioning for context the North Carolina governor reached out to the Trump administration September 15, 2025 asking for Helene relief, stating that they only paid out 9% of what was expected.
2024-10-03 Trump posted about Hurricane Helene relief, “Kamala and Sleepy Joe are universally being given POOR GRADES for the way that they are handling the Hurricane, especially in North Carolina. It is going down as the WORST & MOST INCOMPETENTLY MANAGED “STORM,” AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL, EVER SEEN BEFORE - BUT THEIR MANAGEMENT OF THE BORDER IS WORSE! MAGA2024”.
2024-10-03 After Helene misinformation spread, reports said rescue efforts were hindered and some victims avoided aid over false claims about $750 limits and property seizure.
2024-10-03 Marjorie Taylor Greene posted “Yes they can control the weather. It’s ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it can’t be done”. She later posted a map showing how the hurricane affected areas in conjunction with the electoral map.
2024-10-03 Alex Jones promoted the conspiracy that Hurricane Helene was manmade and accused the federal government of failing to stop it.
2024-10-04 The American Red Cross and the North Carolina DPS had to publish websites fighting harmful Conservative rhetoric and misinformation about aid going into Helene disaster recovery efforts.
2024-10-07 Pro Israel groups including Canary Mission peddled conspiracies on social media that Columbia University student and pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil helped plan Hamas attacks. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also alleged Khalil distributed fliers with a Hamas logo. On March 8 2025 the Trump administration arrested him and shipped him to Louisiana.
2024-10-14 FEMA had to publish a “Hurricane Rumor” fact sheet to help fight dangerous Republican misinformation.
2024-10-23 The NOAA had to publish a fact-checking press release on their website to debunk false claims about weather control.
2024-12-16 Conspiracy theorists claimed New Jersey drone sightings were a “deep state” effort to stop Trump’s inauguration, reviving the “Project Blue Beam” theory.
2024-12-24 Elon Musk attacked Wikipedia as “Wokepedia” and later launched “Grokipedia,” drawing comparisons to the conservative alternative encyclopedia Conservapedia.
2025-01-16 Social media rumors claimed California wildfires were caused by a “Directed Energy Weapon” (DEW).
2025-01-30 Trump blamed DEI, Biden, and Pete Buttigieg for the Potomac plane crash and signed an executive order ending federal DEI hiring practices.
2025-01-30 White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed U.S. taxpayers spent $50 million on condoms for Gaza.
2025-02-03 Elon Musk revived criticism of “shrimp treadmill” research, calling it an “insane” waste of taxpayer money”.
2025-02-04 In response to the Potomac crash Senator Roger Marshall said, “Well, I think diversity issues did contribute to this accident, and what we know for sure is that under Joe Biden that they lowered the standards for people getting into air traffic control. And with that, the number of near misses increased 70% a year”. The Senator went on to say, “What I think you’re gonna find out is there were a lot of qualified white men that they were not hiring because they were holding spots for DEI hires”.
2025-02-20 After a viral post claimed Fort Knox gold was missing, Trump announced in a press conference they “might be going to Fort Knox” to verify.
2025-03-04 Trump falsely claimed over 16 million people aged 100 to 360 were illegally receiving Social Security.
2025-03-05 Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey called for an investigation into Biden’s use of an autopen, arguing it could invalidate executive actions.
2025-03-07 Trump revised student loan forgiveness to exclude anyone they (the Trump administration) deem “anti-American” or “activists”.
2025-03-25 Minnesota introduced SF 2589 to study what they call “Trump Derangement Syndrome”.
2025-04-30 The White House peddled an altered image of the alpha-numeric “M-S-1-3” across Abrego Garcia’s hand and claimed it was a tattoo. Trump insisted during an interview that the image was authentic.
2025-05-15 Representative Warren Davidson and Representative Barry Moore introduced Bill HR3432 the so-called “Trump Derangement Syndrome Research Act of 2025”, claiming that anyone who isn’t aligned with the Trump agenda must be suffering from a mental illness. This was not the first use of this phraseology - it was also found in an opinion article in 2023 “Bari Weiss Derangement Syndrome”.
2025-06-06 News Talk WRNO posted “Mike Howell, President of the Oversight Project and the leading figure in uncovering the autopen scandal, is now weighing in on the Trump Administration’s news that they officially opened an investigation into whether Joe Biden was competent when he used an autopen”. On the 23rd of June, Mike Howell wrote, “Now may I please direct your attention back to the autopen scandal”.
2025-06-22 Trump posted about the autopen, “In other words, Joe Biden did not sign them but, more importantly, he did not know anything about them!” referencing both pardons and staff on the team investigating the January 6 riots.
2025-07-01 Kristi Noem claimed an immigrant attempted to eat their own arm during a deportation flight.
2025-07-22 Trump accused Obama of treason, “they tried to rig the election, and they got caught” and “Whether it’s right or wrong, it’s time to go after people. Obama’s been caught directly”.
2025-07-22 Data from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue showed an increase in false flag claims of 1100%.
2025-07-23 Tulsi Gabbard claimed in a conspiracy-board post that newly released intelligence documents showed the Obama administration manufactured evidence of Russian election interference in 2016
2025-08-25 During an interview with Sean Hannity, Stephen Miller claimed that Democrats are a domestic extremist group.
2025-09-08 Trump posted “THE BIDEN AUTOPEN SCANDAL IS BIG, NOT AS BIG AS THE RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA HOAX, OR THE RIGGED 2020 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, BUT, NEVERTHELESS, ONE OF THE BIGGEST, EVER!!!”
2025-09-13 Laura Loomer posted, “How much you want to bet we are going to find out there is a Trans terror cell that groomed Tyler Robinson and possibly even provided him with the gun to kill Charlie? It seems like this was very pre-meditated”. On the same day in a separate post, Loomer responded to News Wire “It’s time to designate the transgender movement as a terrorist movement.” The next day the Scoop sent out a Poll “Should we ban transgenders from purchasing firearms?”
2025-09-23 Karoline Leavitt announced plans to designate “Antifa” a domestic terrorist organization, citing a White House report linking various incidents of violence to left-wing activism. The September 22 2025 press release begins “President Donald J. Trump is right: the violence problem is on the Left”.
2025-09-25 Trump signed NSPM-7, which included references to anti-Christian beliefs among terrorism indicators.
2025-09-27 Trump alleged Portland ICE facilities were under siege by Antifa, posting on social media that Portland was “war ravaged” and that he planned to authorize “full force”.
2025-09-29 Trump briefly shared and then deleted an AI-generated video featuring Lara Trump promoting “Medbeds.”
2025-09-29 Fox News used viral riot footage from 2020 to report on current protests in Portland.
2025-10-05 Mike Johnson posted, “as a condition for ending the Democrat shutdown, Democrats want hospitals (to be) paid MORE to treat illegal aliens than American citizens”.
2025-10-08 Trump claimed protesters were paid organizers, “…when you see the signs and they’re all made out of beautiful paper…with beautiful wood handles…these are not people that write out their signs…these are paid anarchists”.
2025-10-08 Senator Roger Marshall claimed the upcoming No Kings protest would be organized by paid agitators and suggested National Guard deployment might be necessary. Speaker Mike Johnson called it a “Hate America Rally.”

2025-10-13 Glenn Beck posted on X that the FBI showed up to his house to discuss the so-called “Antifa” network and its funding.
2025-10-14 Jones appealed the $1.4BN judgement against him and was rejected.
2025-10-25 Portland resident Chandler Patey was labeled “Antifa” and his home an “Antifa safe house” after helping protesters affected by pepper spray.
2025-11-03 Conservative activist Laura Loomer received Pentagon press credentials.
2025-11-09 Trump claimed Obama collected royalties from Obamacare.
2025-11-14 Mike Johnson used the government shutdown to claim multiple times that the Democrats “broke the American healthcare system”.
2025-11-20 The CDC website was altered to promote claims linking vaccines and autism.
2025-12-04 The Justice Department issued a broad domestic-terrorism directive focused on alleged Antifa-related activity. Remember: this administration accused Alexi Pretti of terrorism, and they shot him in the back 10 times.
2025-12-10 Coordinated bot activity on social media promoted the false narrative that Taylor Swift was a Nazi.
2025-12-15 Trump invoked “Trump Derangement Syndrome” while posting about the murder of director Rob Reiner and his wife.
2025-12-22 Arizona introduced SB 1070 to research the so-called Trump Derangement Syndrome.
2025-12-26 Right-wing vlogger Nick Shirley alleged widespread childcare fraud involving Somali communities. The claims prompted investigations, funding freezes, and harassment directed at Minnesota childcare centers. Both JD Vance and Pam Bondi publicly praised Shirley. Did You Know? The Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 page 482 and 486 mandate defunding and dismantling childcare?
2025-12-27 JD Vance praised Nick Shirley “This dude has done far more useful journalism than any of the winners of the 2024 @pulitzercenter prizes.”
2026-01-09 Laura Ingraham peddled claims that anti-ICE protesters were being paid rather than acting independently.
2026-01-12 Leavitt defended ICE after the Renee Nicole Good murder, “This administration will continue to stand wholeheartedly by the brave men and women of ICE, including that officer in Minneapolis who was absolutely justified in using self-defense against a lunatic who was part of a group – an organized group – to interject and to impede on law enforcement operations.
2026-01-27 Representative Ilhan Omar was attacked by a far-right activist during a town hall. Trump later claimed the incident had been staged.
2026-02-02 Former Army Ranger Ian Austin was arrested at a protest and charged with terrorism-related offenses.
2026-03-06 Trump accused Bill Maher of having “Trump Derangement Syndrome” after Maher criticized Trump. Bill Maher responded, “I go by what George Bush said to Obama on the day he was inaugurated: ‘We want you to succeed’. I always want the American president to succeed, and I do give credit when you have. But there’s lots of stuff you do that is not my idea of success and I have every right to say so in a democracy…it’s not derangement for me to be always calling out the election denying obsession you have, or the pardons from my friends and punishment for my enemies mode of governing, or the side deals for your family that always seem to be part of everything. We see how rich you’ve all become, but the people of West Virginia don’t seem to be feeling the winning.”
2026-03-20 FEMA official George Phillips claimed his truck levitated 40 miles and he was teleported to a Waffle House. Phillips promoted voter fraud allegations in 2016.
2026-04-18 Trump’s former press secretary Kayleigh McEnany posted, “Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) is driving several blue states to enable fraud!”. In 2020 she pushed election fraud claims and tried to have all Pennsylvanian ballots thrown out. After disclosure of her financial statements showing she received funds from both Trump and TPUSA, Fox news fired her.
2026-04-20 The Onion obtained Alex Jones’ InfoWars. Alex Jones accused some of the owners of being “satanic pedophiles”.
2026-05-23 Licensed psychiatrist Carole Lieberman and RFK are out designate Trump Derangement Syndrome a real diagnosis and assign it an International Classification of Diseases code.
2026-06-24 Eight protesters received decades-long sentences and declared terrorists for demonstrating outside detention centers, with former Marine reserivst Benjaimin Song receiving a 100-year sentence for participating.
2026-07-02 Seven more people were arrested and given harsh sentences and convicted of terrorism for protesting the year prior. One person received a 50 year sentence.
2026-07-24 During the rescheduled correspondence dinner Trump quipped, “This place is really the largest group of Trump derangement syndrome people ever put together at one time, I suspect. Some of you are lucky that our last dinner was cut short, because I had brought with me what would possibly have been—I’m telling you, I had something. I was going to go after you…” and subsequently, “Your lives were really in danger the last time. But on the plus side, your careers were saved”. Then he took jabs at Kaitlan Collins, mocked Dylan Mulvaney, insulted Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon, and targeted opponents.
